Contemporary Kitchen – North Albany, Oregon

This newly remodeled contemporary kitchen in North Albany features the latest in design trends. The Homeowners felt that the existing kitchen was too small with an awkward design lay-out, dated finishes and dysfunctional appliances. They longed for a newly remodeled contemporary kitchen that would coordinate well with adjoining rooms for visual continuity. Their highest priority was to create a more functional, flexible plan better suited for entertaining many sizes of groups.

BEFORE

We created additional work stations for multiple cooks, surfaces with varying heights to facilitate an array of tasks, extensive storage options, additional seating to accommodate guests, and distinctive finishes for a fresh, yet cohesive design.

A wall between the dining room and kitchen was removed, to create a larger, more open plan. An exterior patio door was relocated, and a larger kitchen window installed to increase natural lighting, brighten and visually expand the space. A complete reconfiguration of the layout allowed for a large island, all new appliances, and multiple work stations.

All new lighting consists of various types of same-brand fixtures to conceptually connect the dining room and the kitchen while adding strong visual interest. The owner wanted a neutral rather than bold tile backsplash. After much searching, a perfect color match was found in a textured glass tile that would add extra visual appeal.

Contemporary Caesarstone Kitchen with multi-level island

The island has 3 levels – a lower level Calcutta marble countertop for prepping, rolling, or mixing; a mid-level with the same height and material as the main perimeter countertops (Caesarstone “Blizzard”); and a slightly higher level made with a custom-designed maple table that fits over the end of the island counter.

Although the custom table required extra time and consideration, the challenge to design it was well worth it. It is a pivotal element in the space and is both highly functional and aesthetic. Its inventive flexible design allows it to be moved to any side of the island. Moreover, by simply adding a leg, it easily converts into a free-standing table that can be positioned anywhere in the room. This flexibility maximizes its versatility. It can be arranged so guests can dine in close proximity to family members or it can be relocated where food and drinks can be served off to the side and out of the way.

The table’s custom maple finish ties in well with the existing fireplace and bookshelf in the sitting room. New gray stained wood panels were installed around the fireplace to further unify the two areas. A new stair banister, rail, & newel post were also designed and stained to match the fireplace surround and an existing tansu-style built-in cabinet below the stairs. The overall look of the finished kitchen is sophisticated and inviting. The combination of light and dark materials creates vibrancy while the neutral colors give a soothing feel. Contemporary appliances and fixtures demonstrate the owner’s love of cooking and baking, while the finish selections exemplify their charismatic style. The built-in microwave drawer pictured below is installed underneath the counter for ease of use and convenience.
