After exploring various options with our design team, the front of the house is determined to be the best location for the new master suite. The back of the home includes a previous Powell Construction addition, a large back yard, and a concrete porch (which will be getting remodeled once the additions are a little further along). Because the homeowner did not want to lose any of her backyard amenities, and the rooflines of the existing home would make a backyard addition difficult, it makes the most sense to build the new master suite on the front of the house. The rooflines of the addition will match those already existing, and the front of the addition will use the same window configuration that was previously on the front of the house. When construction is complete it will look like the master suite was part of the original house!During the first week of construction the area needed for the additions is excavated. Eight dump truck loads of dirt are removed from the site! The excavation took two long days to complete, and now it is onto the foundation. When constructing a foundation the first step is to build foundation forms. It’s hard to imagine at this point, but soon there will be 10 foot tall walls coming up from right here. While the construction crew is excavating outside, the homeowners and our designer are finalizing a few selections. Kitchen appliances, the kitchen faucet, paint colors, and tile for the bathroom all need to be chosen. It will still be several weeks until we install tile and appliances, but long lead times and sizing issues cause these decisions to be needed early on. In construction it’s always amazing how all the details are so intertwined. For example, the cabinet maker needs to know the appliance model numbers, so he can custom build the cabinetry to fit, and the tile quantities then need to be ordered to accommodate the size of this cabinetry. Our designer keeps track of the myriad of details and communicates with the appropriate subcontractors to ensure the smooth flow of production.
