Choosing the Right Lighting for Your Home

March 20, 2024

Choosing the right lighting for each area in your home enhances the beauty and functionality of those spaces. Some lighting can make us feel relaxed and comfortable, while other lighting is meant to increase productivity. There are many things to consider when making lighting selections for your home. Thinking about what the space is used is the first step. Will you be preparing food there, paying your bills, applying makeup, or unwinding from your day? Whether it’s for your bathroom vanity, kitchen island, or dining room, proper lighting will set the appropriate tone. Regardless of your space or intention, you’ll find that just the right lighting has been designed for your need.

Ambient lighting is best when you’re wanting to light an entire room; task lighting is essential under cabinetry or over a work space; and accent lighting adds a decorative touch to any space.

Flush mount lighting, typically used for ambient lighting, is best for areas with low ceiling clearance (lower than or around 8 feet) and where bright light is necessary. Opt for flush mount when illuminating a bedroom or hallway to avoid obtrusions in pathways:

Semi-flush mount lighting is optimal in spaces with high ceilings as these lights hang lower. They are great for entries, bathroom or bedrooms that need to feel cozier:

For areas of specific tasks, pendant lights are your best option. Without hanging too low, pendant lights offer bright focused light where you need it most:

The three levels of lighting in this design (recessed ceiling lighting, wall sconces and island pendants) are useful for different tasks and times of day.

Some of the more obvious places to hang a chandelier are over a dining room table or above a breakfast nook. However, chandeliers can be added just about anywhere you want a touch of elegance. Over a bed, hanging above a bathtub, or even in place of a bedside lamp. Chandeliers shouldn’t overpower a space, but will make a statement wherever you choose to place them:

A lower profile, yet still beautiful, lighting option are wall sconces. Whether they’re at your bathroom vanity, placed above open shelving, or beside your bed, wall sconces serve as ideal task lighting:

There is a light for every room of your house, every purpose, and every mood. Consider your space and what you do there to find the perfect light. When remodeling with Powell Construction, we take the guesswork out of choosing adequate lighting and will guide you through the selection process.
