More and more homeowners want to stay in the homes they love well into retirement, and remodeling with “aging in place” in mind is a wonderful way to make that possible. At Powell Construction, we often hear from homeowners who want to incorporate features that support comfort, safety, and accessibility—whether they’re planning ahead or responding to changing mobility needs. Here are some of the most practical and beautiful ideas we’ve brought to life in recent projects.
1. Curbless or Zero-Clearance Showers
A curbless, or zero-clearance, shower brings a clean, modern look while making the space far more accessible. With no step or threshold to navigate, it’s ideal for anyone using a walker or wheelchair and helps reduce the risk of tripping. It also creates a seamless transition from the bathroom floor into the shower, which can make a small space feel larger and more open. Proper floor sloping and waterproofing are essential to ensure everything drains smoothly and performs the way it should for years to come.

2. Grab Bars
Grab bars provide a little extra peace of mind in the shower, around the tub, or near the toilet. Many homeowners tend to avoid them because they worry they’ll look cold or hospital-like, but today there are plenty of stylish options that complement bathroom design—like sleek brushed nickel, warm bronze, or wood-look finishes. Even if you don’t need them just yet, we can plan ahead—adding plywood blocking behind the drywall during a remodel makes it simple to add secure grab bars later, without reopening the walls.

3. Shower Benches
Whether you’re “of age” or not, a shower bench is always a welcome addition. It provides a comfortable and safe place to sit while bathing, shaving, or just taking a moment to relax. A shower bench can be either wall-mounted or fully built-in, crafted from the same tile or quartz used in the rest of the bathroom. It can also double as a convenient shelf for toiletries. It’s a small detail that adds a big sense of comfort and ease.

4. Handheld Shower Heads

A handheld shower head adds flexibility and independence, especially when paired with a shower bench. When controls are within easy reach, it’s just as convenient for seated use as it is when standing. It’s also handy for rinsing the shower walls or washing pets—one of those little upgrades that quickly becomes a favorite feature.

5. Seated Vanity
A seated vanity is another feature that’s as practical as it is luxurious. Having a comfortable place to sit while getting ready makes daily routines more relaxed, and it becomes even more valuable as mobility changes over time. It’s a thoughtful touch that makes the bathroom feel inviting while adding a sense of elegance.

6. Slip-Resistant Flooring

Flooring plays a big role in bathroom safety. Smaller tiles—4×4 inches or less—offer more grout lines, which naturally create better traction. Glossy tiles can become slippery when wet, so choosing matte, textured, or honed finishes is a safer and more comfortable option. Penny tile and pebble tile are excellent choices that add grip and feel great underfoot. After all, safer choices can be stylish, too.

7. Lever Faucets & Door Handles

Lever-style faucets and door handles make everyday tasks noticeably easier for everyone. At the sink, a single lever controls both hot and cold, eliminating the need for gripping or twisting—just a smooth push up or down. The same is true for lever door handles, which are simply easier to operate than traditional knobs. These small changes add a subtle boost of convenience throughout the home.
8. Elevators for Multi-Level Living
If your home has multiple levels, an elevator can offer long-term ease and help you move through your home without worry. While it’s certainly an investment, it lets you continue using and enjoying every floor for years to come. With early planning, an elevator can be integrated in a way that feels right at home with your layout and style.
For one of our clients, their whole-house remodel was driven by a desire to comfortably age in place while staying in the location they love. A new residential elevator became the perfect solution, opening directly into their beautifully redesigned primary bathroom. What was once a cramped, outdated space is now a spacious retreat with a walk-in shower and separate Jacuzzi tub. >>>>

Remodeling for aging in place is about more than adapting to life’s changes—it’s about making sure your home continues to feel like your home. With thoughtful planning and a few smart upgrades, you can enjoy independence and peace of mind for decades to come.
