Smart Kitchen Design for Aging in Place: Practical Ideas From Our Kitchen Remodels

December 15, 2025

Remodeling a kitchen so it works well today, and adapts to changing needs over time, is one of the most meaningful updates homeowners can make. In many of our projects, we’ve incorporated features that help the kitchen feel easier to navigate, safer to use, and more enjoyable, all while keeping the design stylish and inviting. Here, we’re sharing a few of those elements that make a kitchen comfortable for years to come.

1. Deep Drawers for Everyday Essentials

Deep base drawers are one of the most functional upgrades you can make in a kitchen designed for aging in place. With a simple pull, the contents are completely visible and accessible, eliminating awkward reaching or bending.

These drawers easily hold pots, pans, mixing bowls, and even small appliances. Adding dishware organizers inside drawers allows plates and bowls to be stored at waist height–no need to lift heavy or fragile items from the upper cabinets! It’s a simple change that makes daily tasks easier.

2. Built-In Microwave Drawer

This same idea carries over to appliances as well. A microwave drawer eliminates the need to lift hot dishes overhead, a motion that can become uncomfortable or risky. Installed just below counter height, it allows you to slide items in and out without straining to reach.

The controls are usually on the top front edge of the drawer making them easy to operate and accessible whether the drawer is open or closed. The door glides open with the push of a button, and the design keeps counters clear for food prep. It’s one of the most popular features we install.

3. Custom Cabinet Pullouts and Pantry Drawers

Custom pullouts make the most of every inch, especially in tight or hard-to-reach corners. They turn awkward spaces into smooth, usable storage. Blind-corner storage systems bring the entire shelf toward you, so there’s no need to kneel or reach deep into a cabinet.

Tall pantry cabinets with pull-out drawers complement this approach, making food storage simple and ergonomic. Keeping all your food items in one central location eliminates the need to hunt for ingredients across multiple cabinets. Cans, cereal boxes, and snacks slide out smoothly into full view, so you can easily grab what you need.

4. Wall Ovens for Comfort and Accessibility

A wall oven lets homeowners choose a comfortable installation height, making it easier to slide dishes in and out without bending. This also makes it safer to transfer hot items directly to a nearby counter. Because it’s installed away from the cooktop, it can be placed outside the primary workspace aisle, keeping the kitchen easier to navigate.

5. Rounded Countertop Corners

Sharp countertop corners can be bothersome since accidental bumps are common while moving around the kitchen, especially in tight spaces or when reaching across counters. Rounded edges create a more forgiving surface, reducing the chance of minor knocks. Beyond comfort, gentle curves also add subtle visual softness, giving the kitchen an inviting and approachable feel.

6. Appliance Lifts for Heavy Kitchen Tools

Small appliances like stand mixers, crock pots, and toaster ovens can be surprisingly heavy. Appliance lifts making accessing them a breeze. With a light touch, the platform raises the appliance to counter level and tucks it away just as easily when not in use. This keeps your countertops clear and your most-used tools right where you need them—no more struggling to lift a bulky appliance from a lower cabinet.

The one in this project even has a handy below-cabinet outlet which allows it to remain plugged in and ready to go!>>>

Designing for aging in place doesn’t mean giving up style—it means creating a space that stays comfortable, safe, and supports independence for years to come. Whether you’re planning a full kitchen remodel or making targeted updates, these features can simplify daily routines while maintaining the beauty of your home.
