Stand-Alone Craft Studio
— CORVALLIS, OR —
Every crafter dreams of a dedicated space where ideas can flow freely and materials are always at hand. After all, a well-ordered studio makes it easier to focus and bring artistic vision to life. One crafty homeowner came to us with that very hope. She envisioned a tranquil retreat where she could organize her supplies, spread out, and let her creativity flourish!
Because space in her home was limited, she had been using the only downstairs bedroom for her projects. Quite frequently, her materials were expanding into the living areas making their home feel a bit cluttered and congested. She longed for a spacious, light-filled room with cheerful colors, plenty of storage, and lots of counterspace. Although their home didn’t have the available square footage to create such a space, they did have an adjacent garden area that they hadn’t been using. This was the perfect location to build a separate studio and would give her easy access to and from the house.
More about this project
It was important to Powell Construction to design a structure that would reflect the architecture of their home and give the impression that the studio was a natural addition to the property. The small gable nestled over the studio’s entry gives it a charming cottage appearance. Vaulted ceilings and plenty of natural light make the space feel roomy and open. They selected a brilliant blue paint for the exterior which was consistent with the house and the detached garage.
The homeowner selected luxury vinyl floors and laminate countertops that are colorful and uplifting and will be durable surfaces to work on. A wall of peg board provides versatility in organizing her art tools and leaves them readily accessible. Bright spools of thread are displayed on a rack that her husband built for her…they certainly add a fun pop of color to the room! The large center island allows her to lay out fabrics and patterns for sewing and quilting. Around the perimeter of the room, we installed a long run of countertops and cabinetry which gives her an abundance of workspace and storage.
In front of the studio, we added a new patio to connect two of their existing patio areas. Now the couple has a nice walkway between buildings and a larger area for outdoor entertaining or savoring coffee on pleasant mornings. The addition of this beautiful new studio has freed up the downstairs bedroom in their home, which grants the potential for aging in place–an important consideration for any retired homeowner.
