Charcoal Blue Kitchen
– Corvallis, OR –
This homeowner came to us with a cramped, out of date kitchen and a desire to make it more modern and functional for everyday use. The existing space contained limited cabinetry and not many options for reconfiguration. Luckily, we were able to remove a non-load bearing wall and relocate the kitchen to an unused dining room, leaving behind a breakfast nook and a convenient space for an office.
MORE ABOUT THIS PROJECT
The relocation of the kitchen left room for a large island with an integrated cooktop and a built-in bench for a breakfast nook. We also relocated an exterior door so that it would avoid interrupting the new kitchen’s nice run of cabinetry. The home had a large back porch, so it worked out well to find a spot to move it.
The client wanted a modern look that fit their personal style, but would also be suitable for resale value down the road. They also wanted easy cleaning and darker tones that wouldn’t show as much mess as a lighter palette. We chose a charcoal blue for the cabinets and the dark, beautiful PentalQuartz “Cinza” quartz. When choosing two dark pieces similar in value, making one a cool tone (the blue of the cabinets) and one a warm tone (the browns of the Cinza) helps provide contrast. For the tile, we chose a light cool blue with an eye-catching crackle detail.
For the floor, we chose a luxury vinyl plank from CoreTEC. It contains both gray and brown tones, to bring an overall warmth to the space while still being contemporary. The chosen color will also hide dirt well. It’s an economical choice that is virtually pet and child proof.
The black slate appliances have a contemporary look that also provide contrast between the stainless sink, faucet, and cabinet hardware. The custom made trim kit for the built in microwave provides a clean look, as it matches the surrounding cabinetry. The redesigned space is modern, functional, and has changed the way the homeowner uses the kitchen and the space as a whole. When the project wrapped up, the homeowner told us that if they’d known what a difference the remodel would make, they would have done it years earlier!
