Kitchen Remodel & Expansion

The home previously had a small kitchen, a carpeted dining room, and a family room with a fireplace. The homeowners found all these separate rooms to be inconvenient and realized they never used their dining room. The existing finishes appeared disconnected and dark, with wood paneling, older brick, and carpet in hard-to-clean areas. The family desired a larger kitchen for entertaining and storage, a natural flow between rooms, and hardwood throughout.

To join the formerly segmented spaces, we removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room and expanded the opening in the wall between the kitchen and family room. Custom maple cabinets, Geriba Beach Granite, and red oak floors were installed to add warmth to the design. The play of natural colors in the kitchen is inviting, a stark contrast to what was there before. Adding windows into the backyard gives the kitchen more natural light while improving the view of the uniquely tiered back yard, thus providing a great opportunity for the homeowners to showcase their award-winning dahlia collection.

The generous kitchen island seats six and serves as the dining room table. The pendant lights over the island from Quoizel’s Uptown Living Collection add whimsy and modernity to the kitchen, as does the Sonneman Candela Tulip pendant over the sink. The stainless steel Broan hood complements the pendent fixtures and the Schuab cabinet pulls.

After the kitchen/dining remodel was complete, there was still one aspect of the home that needed a facelift. We updated the fireplace to match the cabinets in the kitchen. This provided a visual connection between the spaces. The end result is an open and bright kitchen that is integrated with the rest of the home, with warm finishes and modern amenities throughout!
