Before & After Showcase: Additions Edition

August 25, 2025

We hope you’ve been enjoying our Before & After series, where we’ve highlighted some incredible kitchen, bathroom, and interior transformations. Today, we’re wrapping things up with a spotlight on additions—projects where the change is so dramatic, in some cases, there wasn’t much of a “before” to photograph.

From expansive second stories to primary suites and a craft studio, these projects showcase what’s possible when creative design and ambitious goals come together. While we can’t show every detail here, you’ll find plenty of striking moments—and if a particular project catches your eye, just click the title to view the full portfolio.

—From Dated Ranch to Southern Farmhouse Showstopper—

This dramatic transformation is our largest addition to date—turning a tired 1980s ranch-style home into a stunning two-story farmhouse inspired by classic Southern design.

Before

Before the remodel, the home was sorely dated, inside and out. The layout felt dark and confining, with limited space for gathering or overnight guests. Our client dreamed of a warm, welcoming home where she could host friends and extended family with ease.

The reimagined home now boasts a spacious new second story featuring a luxurious primary suite, walk-in closet, and a light-filled office and lounge area. Downstairs, the former primary bedroom and bath were transformed into a generous guest suite, perfect for hosting. A new bunkroom provides additional space for visiting grandchildren, or… a serene place to sit and read.

Outdoors, a charming wraparound porch and a dramatic double-sided fireplace create the ideal setting for year-round entertaining. This once-outdated ranch is now a gracious, light-filled retreat—thoughtfully designed for connection, comfort, and celebration.

—A Main Level Addition That Doubled the Living Space—

With a growing family and both homeowners working from home, the existing layout of this ranch style home no longer met their needs. The home lacked sufficient space, privacy, and functional living areas.

AFTER: This 1,250-square-foot main level addition nearly doubled the size of the home. Key features include—

A primary suite complete with a walk-through closet system, spacious bathroom, and French doors leading to the back deck. The bathroom design blends modern farmhouse charm with function—featuring a double vanity, large shower, subway tile, and hexagonal accents.

A cozy family movie space includes a ceiling-mounted projector, while built-in mudroom cabinets offer smart storage for daily essentials. This room also created a connection between the main home and garage, improving the overall layout and clearly separating shared gathering spaces from private bedrooms and baths.

The new wraparound back deck offers direct access from the primary suite and creates plenty of room for outdoor dining and relaxing.

—A Two-Story Addition That Feels Original—

It’s one thing to expand a home—it’s another to make it look like the new space has always been there. This 765-square-foot, two-story addition achieves exactly that, blending flawlessly with the original architecture, it enhances both design appeal and functionality. From the outside, you’d never guess an addition was made—and that’s exactly what the homeowners and design team set out to accomplish.

Exterior BEFORE Addition

Before:

Like many homes in the neighborhood, the original facade was dominated by the garage, leaving the front of the home feeling off balance and lacking curb appeal. Indoors, the layout no longer met the needs of the homeowners, who were looking to create a more functional space for everyday life—including a private suite, home office, and guest accommodations.

After:

The new addition added 15 feet to the home’s length and includes a main-level guest suite, full bath, and office, as well as a new upstairs primary suite. With proportions, materials, and details precisely aligned to the existing home, the addition blends in so naturally it seems original.

Our design reoriented the home visually by balancing the garage with a new mirrored gable and matching picture windows—creating a more symmetrical, inviting façade. Aligning rooflines, floor heights, and framing required detailed planning and expert craftsmanship to ensure the addition felt seamless. Here are some highlights of the home’s newly added interior:

—A Cheerful Studio That Feels Right at Home—

Every creative needs room to work—and one crafty homeowner turned to us with a dream: a dedicated studio where ideas could flow freely and materials could be neatly organized. With limited space inside the home, we helped transform an underused garden area into a light-filled backyard retreat designed for crafting, sewing, and inspiration.

BEFORE: This simple yard space set the stage for a stand-alone craft retreat.

Before:

Without a dedicated space, the homeowner had been using the only downstairs bedroom as a makeshift studio. As her projects grew, so did the materials—which frequently overflowed into the main living spaces, making the home feel cramped and cluttered. With no room to expand indoors, the adjacent garden area became the perfect spot for a stand-alone solution.

After:

The new detached studio was carefully designed to complement the existing house and garage—featuring a charming gable roofline, vaulted ceilings, and bright blue siding that ties into the property’s color palette. It now serves as a peaceful, functional space where creativity can thrive.

This stand-alone studio proves that creative solutions don’t always require expanding your main home. With intentional design and thoughtful planning, even a modest garden corner can become a dream workspace—and, in this case, free up valuable space inside the home for future needs.

As we’ve shared these incredible addition stories—from expansive second stories to backyard studios—it’s clear that a well-designed addition does more than just increase square footage. It creates space for gathering, for quiet focus, for family growth and future needs. Most importantly, each one is tailored to fit the way a family truly lives.

If you’re considering how to make your home work better for your lifestyle, we’d love to help you explore the possibilities.
